Course description:
This advanced one-day course explores the clinical use of six different speech tests with the aim to integrate a range of assessment and rehabilitative requirements during the client’s Audiological journey.
Speech Audiometry (AB word lists) – Generally, sensori-neural loss is simply accepted as the type of loss. However, when clients are not performing with their hearing instruments as well as expected we may need speech testing for differential diagnosis to identify if the problem is Sensory, Neural, or a combination of both.
QuickSIN : Speech understanding in noise cannot be reliably predicted from the pure tone audiogram. QuickSIN results can suggest how well clients are likely to cope hearing speech in the real world, and can guide our choice of amplification and accessories. Learn how we can also use this test to approach Cochlear Dead Regions.
Phoneme Perception Test: The top six hearing instrument manufacturers all use some form of Frequency Lowering. This test will support the fine tuning of the Frequency Lowering system and validate that the client is receiving benefit in terms of audibility, discrimination, and recognition of high frequency phonemes.
Listen in Spatialised Noise – Sentences Test ( LISN-S) : Great difficulty hearing in noise with normal PTA results needs further exploration. This test may support differentiation between different aspects of Auditory Processing Disorders, leading to a potential technological solution or a specific form of auditory training.
Audible Contrast Threshold Test (ACT): This test determines how much ‘contrast’ a client needs to hear the difference between sounds, estimating how well the client will hear speech in noise. Findings can be used to directly influence how the adaptive features of a hearing aid are programmed such as noise reduction and directionality.
Ling-6 Sounds: Administering Ling-6 sounds is often used to assess whether a child can detect sounds that lie within the speech spectrum. Learn how the live voice method has now been adapted recorded, and calibrated, and can be used with a bracketed threshold measurement as an alternative to PTA for clients with Dementia or Learning Disabilities.
